Visit DC

Washington DC is my favorite city in the world. I have lived and visited internationally, so my opinion is based upon a reasonable amount of experience.

Since I am getting more requests to suggest itineraries for visitors to the Nations Capital, I thought I would post this generic advice. You can still write me to get a more personalized suggestion or to suggest improvements to this list.

overview

DC is more than government buildings and museums. There are plenty of green spaces, restaurants, dance clubs, and other things to see. The best part is that are many free attractions.

VisitingDC and 10Best have relatively good generic guides.

transportation

Use the Metro rail and bus. If the Metro doesn't go there, reconsider going. Inside DC, the Circulator bus is a convenient option for getting around. Check out fares for day and week passes.
DC is increasingly bike friendly, so consider the city's short-term bike rental program and looking at DC's bike map.
Consider getting a pedicab for a day tour or for a fun way to get from A to B.
Walking is also another fine option for this 10x10 mile city.

lodging

Simply, hotels in DC are more expensive than hotels in the metropolitan areas. The least expensive lodging is likely through Craigslist Vacation Rentals.

sight seeing

Double-decker hop-on/off bus tours are a great way to quickly get acquainted with the city and its sites. Duck tours are a little more stimulating. Segway tours are easier and more expensive than free walking tours.
Whitehouse tours start early every day. Tickets need to be arranged at least one month in advance through your Congressperson or embassy.
Walk the Mall.
Go to museums. The Air & Space museum is quite popular. You can catch IMAX movies there at at other museums.
Places to shop include Georgetown mall and Pentagon City Fashion Center.
Consider strange attractions in DC
Green space like the National Arboretum and Rock Creek park are large enough to get lost inside. History buffs may want to take the Yellow line to Old Town Alexandria and walk King Street.

nightlife

Concert venues include 9:30 club and Black Cat.
Beer lovers should go to RFD in Chinatown and Brickskeller west of Dupont.
