Visit DC

Washington DC is my favorite city in the world. I have lived and visited internationally, so my opinion is based upon a reasonable amount of experience.

Since I am getting more requests to suggest itineraries for visitors to the Nations Capital, I thought I would post this generic advice. You can still write me to get a more personalized suggestion or to suggest improvements to this list.

overview

DC is more than government buildings and museums. There are plenty of green spaces, restaurants, dance clubs, and other things to see. The best part is that are many free attractions.

VisitingDC and 10Best have relatively good generic guides.

transportation

  • Use the Metro rail and bus. If the Metro doesn't go there, reconsider going. Inside DC, the Circulator bus is a convenient option for getting around. Check out fares for day and week passes.
  • DC is increasingly bike friendly, so consider the city's short-term bike rental program and looking at DC's bike map.
  • Consider getting a pedicab for a day tour or for a fun way to get from A to B.
  • Walking is also another fine option for this 10x10 mile city.

lodging

Simply, hotels in DC are more expensive than hotels in the metropolitan areas. The least expensive lodging is likely through Craigslist Vacation Rentals.
